Bill Gross, Chairman of the Board

Bill Gross founded Idealab in March 1996 and has served as Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and as a Director since that time. A lifelong entrepreneur, Bill started several companies prior to Idealab. In high school, he founded Solar Devices, a firm that sold plans and kits for solar energy products. In college at the California Institute of Technology, he patented a new loudspeaker design and formed GNP Loudspeakers, Inc. After graduating from college, Bill and his brother Larry started GNP Development, Inc., which made a natural language product for Lotus 1-2-3 called HAL. In 1985, Lotus Development Corporation acquired GNP and Bill became a software entrepreneur at Lotus Development. In 1991, Bill started Knowledge Adventure, an educational software publisher, that grew to be the third largest educational software publisher in the world and was eventually sold to Cendant Software and is now a division of Havas Interactive, which is owned by Vivendi. Bill serves on the boards of directors of numerous companies and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and of the Art Center College of Design. Bill received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
John Waller, Chief Executive Officer

Prior to joining X1, John Waller acted as Managing Director of the New Ventures Group for Idealab. Waller founded Green Thumb Ventures, an incubator and investment company that funds and develops seed level internet and technology enterprises. Mr. Waller also co-founded Resume.com where he served as CEO and President. At Resume.com he developed strategic partnerships and negotiated the sale of the company to Adecco S.A., the largest staffing company in the world. Before starting Resume.com, Waller co-founded Interactive Imaginations, the predecessor to 24/7 Real Media. Mr. Waller began his career on Wall Street, joining Bull and Bear in New York City. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and his MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA.

Mr. Waller is a frequent guest speaker and panelist at seminars, conferences and universities, speaking on the topics of entrepreneurship, venture capital and angel investing.
John Maxwell, VP of Worldwide Marketing

Heading up X1's marketing, telemarketing and go-to-market strategies, John is able to leverage his sales and marketing skills that span a dozen years in product management and marketing, public relations and inside sales/telemarketing. With a career that began as a computer science major focused on software programming, he worked for the Information Technology groups of two Fortune 100 firms; EDS and American Airlines. With a desire to work directly for a software vendor, John joined Sterling Software where he became Director of Product Marketing within their Storage Management Unit. From there, he moved up the ranks at Veritas Software to become VP of Product Marketing where he was part of the team that grew Veritas to market dominance in the backup and recovery software market. Prior to joining X1 as a consultant, and subsequently VP of Marketing, John also worked at Sun Microsystems as VP of Marketing for Network Storage and held executive level roles at several startups.
