Social media catches real-time conversation, states of mind, activities and location at a particular time. This has a huge impact on litigation and investigations. X1’s bookings grew by 69% in three-quarters of a year, and the courts have been closed for much of that time.

Social media has undoubtedly changed the way we communicate, and is beginning to displace email as the preferred method of communication for many employees in the workplace. But social media is a headache, once we consider legal and compliance best practices when such interactions in the workplace go awry.

Recent research notes that approximately 80% of information stored by companies is “dark data” that is in the form of unstructured, distributed data (generally data on laptops, email and file servers, and social media) that can pose significant legal and operational risks.

Remote collection is becoming more prevalent as more employees work outside the office, but e-discovery companies say it’s part of a larger trend that will continue after COVID-19 subsides.

I have known Craig Carpenter, CEO of data collection company X1, for almost as long as I have been in eDiscovery. At Relativity Fest in Chicago, I at last had the opportunity to interview him. The context was a newly-announced partnership between X1 and Relativity. Why, I asked, should users be excited about this?

X1, a provider of data discovery and compliance software, has announced the addition of the X1 Social Discovery technology into the RelativityOne and Relativity server platforms. X1 supports electronically stored information (ESI) collection from custodial data sources such as laptops and desktops and social media evidence directly into Relativity and RelativityOne.

Now, whether a PC or MacOS user, enterprise customers can locate and access data across devices to ensure consistent compliance, legal, IT management, and data protection at the enterprise level, according to X1 CEO Craig Carpenter.

Idealab company staffs up and moves downtown. Pasadena-based software developer X1 Discovery Inc. is closing out 2019 with a series of big changes. The company moved to a larger headquarters downtown in late November after graduating from Idealab, a startup incubator based in Pasadena and founded by investor and entrepreneur Bill Gross.

Craig Carpenter, the CEO of X1, a data search tool that can be used for e-discovery and to track data, spoke to Corporate Counsel about how X1 is being used in the wake of CCPA and GDPR and skills GCs who hope to move to the C-suite should have.

X1’s focus is on unstructured data. Originally built as a desktop search tool, the technology now focuses on e-discovery and investigations, looking to find, analyze and act on unstructured data at the end point before it moves downstream to review. Speaking with Legaltech News last week, Carpenter said X1’s position aligns well of with his vision of the e-discovery marketplace, where the goal is to “move the strategy formation phase up to the beginning, as opposed to later in the process.”
